The Port and City of Baltimore were established in 1706 and 1729, respectively. In 1814, a flag flying from Fort McHenry served as the inspiration for Francis Scott Key's "The Star-Spangled Banner." The completion of the Baltimore & Ohio (B&O) railroad in 1852 helped cement Baltimore as a major East Coast port.
